Use a calibrated torque wrench, not just an impact gun, and tighten in a star pattern. If you are ever unsure of the correct setting for your car, check your handbook first.

Too tight and you can damage the wheel, the stud or the brake disc, and some alloy wheels are more sensitive to over-tightening than steel ones. How to torque your wheels correctly

If you are ever unsure of the correct setting for your car, check your handbook first.

Step 1: Use a calibrated torque wrench
An impact gun is fine to start, but finish every nut or bolt with a calibrated torque wrench set to the figure for your car.
Step 2: Tighten in a star pattern
Work across the wheel in a star pattern rather than round in a circle, so the wheel pulls in evenly against the hub.
Step 3: Re-torque after 50 to 100 miles
Check and re-torque after the first 50 to 100 miles following any wheel change, repair or refurbishment.

Wheel torque questions

Where can I find the torque setting for my car?

Your vehicle handbook lists the wheel nut or bolt torque for your model, usually in the section on changing a wheel or in the technical data at the back. Many manufacturers also publish their handbooks online. You can use the table on this page as a starting point, then confirm the figure in your handbook.

What happens if my wheel nuts are not torqued correctly?

Under-tightened nuts can work loose while driving, which is dangerous. Over-tightened nuts can damage the wheel, stretch or snap a stud, or warp a brake disc. Always use the setting listed for your exact make and model.

Can I use an impact wrench to tighten my wheel nuts?

An impact wrench is fine for the first stage of tightening, but always finish with a calibrated torque wrench set to the correct figure for your car. An impact wrench alone cannot tell you the actual torque applied.

How soon should I re-torque my wheels after a repair or wheel change?

Check and re-torque after around 50 to 100 miles of driving. This is standard practice after any wheel removal, including a refurbishment or diamond cut finish, to allow for any initial settling.

Does the torque setting change between steel and alloy wheels?

It can. Some manufacturers specify a different torque for alloy wheels than for steel wheels on the same model. Always check the figure for the wheel type you actually have fitted.
