Bigger wheels usually mean low-profile tyres, which have a thin strip of rubber around the rim. That thin tyre wall gives the alloy very little protection. When you brush a high kerb or drop into a pothole, the rim takes the hit instead of the tyre.
A few things make Mercedes wheels more likely to suffer damage:
- Large diameter rims. The bigger the wheel, the closer the edge sits to the road and the kerb.
- Low-profile tyres. Less rubber means less of a cushion, so knocks reach the alloy quickly.
- Multi-spoke and AMG designs. Detailed spokes and sharp edges show every scuff, and they are harder to hide.
- Everyday driving. Tight parking spaces, speed bumps and rough roads all add up over time.

Diamond-cut Mercedes wheels and why they corrode
A lot of Mercedes and AMG models come with diamond-cut wheels. These have a bright, machined face that catches the light and gives that sharp, factory finish. To make them, the wheel is spun on a lathe and a very thin layer is cut away to leave a smooth, shiny surface. A clear lacquer is then added on top to protect it.
The problem is that the lacquer is the only thing keeping water away from the bare metal. Once you chip that lacquer on a kerb, water gets underneath and the alloy starts to corrode. You often see this as cloudy white marks or a milky look spreading out from the edge. Ordinary paint cannot fix this properly, because a diamond-cut face has to be re-machined to look right again.

AMG wheels often use more than one colour, such as a matte grey or gloss black spoke with a polished or diamond-cut face. These two-tone finishes look fantastic, but they need care to repair. If the colour is even slightly off, the wheel will not match the others on your car.
