What is wheel lacquer (clear coat)?
Lacquer, also called clear coat, is a thin see-through layer that sits on top of the paint on your alloy wheels. Think of it like a coat of clear nail varnish over a colour. You cannot always see it, but it is doing a big job.
The lacquer has two main jobs. First, it gives the wheel its glossy, wet-looking shine. Second, it acts as a shield. It keeps out water, road salt, brake dust and dirt, so the paint and the metal underneath stay protected. When that clear coat starts to fail, the shield is broken. Once that happens, the damage usually spreads.
Why alloy wheel lacquer peels
Lacquer does not peel for no reason. It is almost always caused by the clear coat being worn down or by moisture getting underneath it. The clear lacquer is basically a thin layer of polymer, and like all polymers, it can break down over time when it is attacked by sunlight, heat and chemicals.
Here are the main causes of alloy wheel lacquer peeling.

Very often it is a mix of these things. For example, years of sun and heat weaken the lacquer, then one kerb scrape lets moisture in and the peeling takes off from there.
Why you cannot just re-lacquer over peeling clear coat
This is the question we get asked the most. It seems simple: if the lacquer is flaking, why not just brush or spray a fresh coat on top?
Sadly, it does not work. New lacquer will only stick to a clean, solid surface. If you paint over old peeling clear coat, you are laying good lacquer on top of a layer that is already lifting away. Within weeks it will peel again, and often it looks worse than before.
There is another problem too. If corrosion has started under the old coat, sealing over it just traps the moisture inside. The metal keeps corroding out of sight, and the new lacquer bubbles up soon after.
For a repair that lasts, all of the old, failing lacquer has to be stripped off first. There are no shortcuts.
Can you fix peeling lacquer at home?
You can try, but it usually goes wrong, and here is why.
To do the job properly, you need to remove every bit of the old lacquer, treat any corrosion, and then lay down fresh coats evenly. Doing this by hand is very hard. Most home attempts run into two problems: blending and adhesion.
Blending is the tricky part where the repaired area has to match the rest of the wheel. Do it by hand, and you often end up with a patch that looks cloudy, streaky or a slightly different colour. Adhesion means how well the new coat grips. Without the right cleaning, heat and equipment, the fresh lacquer simply does not bond, so it lifts off again.
On top of this, aerosol lacquer from a shop is much thinner and weaker than the baked-on coating a workshop uses. So even a neat home job will not last as long. For most people, a home fix ends up costing more time and money than getting it done right the first time.
How professional lacquer repair works
A proper workshop repair removes the problem at the root and rebuilds the finish from bare metal up. You can see our full method on our repair process page, but here is the short version of how we fix peeling lacquer on alloy wheels.
First, the old coating is stripped right off. The wheels are dipped in special chemicals that remove all the old paint, lacquer and grime. Next, the wheels are blasted with fine aluminium oxide, which cleans away any rust or corrosion and leaves a perfect surface for new coatings to grip.
The wheel is then inspected for cracks, buckles and kerb damage, and any of these are repaired. After that, a powder base coat and colour coat are applied and baked hard in an oven. Finally, a fresh coat of our signature acrylic lacquer goes on and is cured, giving that deep, even gloss and a strong new shield against water and salt.

Diamond-cut wheels and lacquer peel
Diamond-cut wheels are especially prone to lacquer peeling, so they deserve a special mention.
A diamond-cut wheel has part of its bare aluminium machined on a lathe to create a bright, polished, shiny face. That shine looks fantastic, but the bare metal is protected only by a thin layer of lacquer. There is no thick paint layer underneath to help, so the clear coat is the only thing standing between the metal and the weather.
If even a small chip or crack appears in that lacquer, water gets straight onto the bare aluminium. It then corrodes, and you start to see cloudy white spots or worm-like marks spreading under the clear coat. Once that begins, the lacquer lifts and the wheel needs refinishing.

Wash your wheels regularly with warm water and a mild car shampoo, and keep away from strong acid wheel cleaners. Rinse off road salt in winter, as salt is one of the biggest causes of corrosion.
